Japan is planning a slight increase in defense spending, with plans to buy more long-range patrol aircraft, cargo jets and helicopter carriers as well as V-22 Ospreys and F-35 stealth fighters. Russian combat planes frequently stage incursions near Hokkaido and the disputed Kuril Islands, and also commonly fly around the Japanese mainland. Chinese incursions have been focused on the East China Sea, near the disputed Senkaku islands, which China claims as the Diaoyu Islands. The past year has seen flights by Chinese military planes over Japanese airspace and into the western Pacific. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. INTRODUCTION: The Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin, is a Japanese experimental aircraft for testing advanced stealth fighter aircraft technologies. The Japanese Ministry of Defense Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI) is developing it for research purposes. The main contractor of the project is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The X-2 will be used as a technology demonstrator and research prototype to determine whether domestic advanced technologies for a fifth generation fighter aircraft are viable. It has been under development at a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries plant in Toyoyama since 2009. NEED: Japan has been very conscious of the increasing Chinese assertiveness and belligerency. Keeping this in view, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, Japan was seeking to replace its aging fleet of fighter aircraft. It had approached the United States for purchasing several Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor fighters. However the U.S. Congress had banned the exporting of the aircraft in order to safeguard secrets of the aircraft's technology such as its extensive use of stealth. This rejection led Japan to develop its own modern 5th generation fighter. FEATURES: Currently there are limited details available. Here is what we know about it so far: 1. The jet will have stealth features and enabling it to have very small Radar Cross Section (RCS). This will make it harder for the radars to detect this jet. 2. The aircraft features 3D thrust vectoring capability for enhanced maneuverability. 3. Its radar will be an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar called the 'Multifunction RF Sensor', which is intended to have broad spectrum agility, capabilities for electronic countermeasures (ECM), electronic support measures (ESM), communications functions, and possibly even microwave weapon functions. 4. Among the planned features of the X2 is a fly-by-optics flight control system. 5. Ability to super cruise at Mach 1.8. 6. A 'Self Repairing Flight Control Capability' which will allow the aircraft to automatically detect failures or damage in its flight control surfaces like wings, and use the remaining control surfaces to calibrate accordingly to retain controlled flight. CURRENT STATE: The X2 for the first time took off from Nagoya airport in Aichi Prefecture at 8:47 a.m., on 22 April 2016. After the United States, China, and Russia, Japan has become the 4th nation to test-fly an indigenously developed stealth aircraft. Currently Japan has not finalized on the option it will choose with respect to 5th gen fighter. Tokyo is exploring the following options: 1. Develop a homegrown stealth fighter jet all by itself. 2. Jointly develop it with other countries. 3. Buy F 35 from the United States. The decision is likely to be taken by March 2019. Japan has spent $331 million on the X-2 so far. IMPACT: The introduction of the prototype comes at a time when competition in developing superior stealth fighters has intensified. China’s Chengdu J-10, which has some stealth capability, is already in service, and Beijing is likely to introduce the fifth-generation fighter jet Chengdu J-20 in a few years. With increasing fear of Chinese aggression, Japan has chosen to upgrade it defenses. Especially current Prime Minister Abee, has sought to broaden his nation’s military capabilities and reach. Having superior jet fighters is crucial to Japan’s air defense, particularly at a time when is China ramping up its maritime and aerial military capabilities in the East and South China seas.

It was reported that two Chinese early warning planes and two bombers were spotted over the area between Okinawa's mainland and Miyako Island on Sunday. Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had reportedly approved the use of air force planes to shoot down unmanned Chinese aircraft in Japanese airspace. According to Reuters, "Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also told his troops on Sunday that Japan would not tolerate the use of force to change the region's status quo, an expression used by Japanese politicians and security experts to refer to what they see as China's aggressive maritime expansion. "Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, asked about Abe's comments, said Japanese leaders had been repeatedly making "provocative" remarks. "This once again shows that Japanese politicians are deceiving themselves with their arrogance and guilty conscience," she told a daily news briefing. "Ties between Asia's two largest economies deteriorated sharply after Japan bought three of the disputed East China Sea islets from a private owner in September 2012, sparking protests and boycotts of Japanese goods across China." -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. China scrambles jets in air zone to monitor US and Japanese planes China says it has a right to carry out defence and surveillance activities in the zone China says it scrambled fighter jets to monitor US and Japanese planes as they flew in its newly declared air defence zone in the East China Sea on Friday. The zone covers territory claimed by China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. China said last week that all aircraft crossing through the zone must file flight plans and identify themselves or face "defensive emergency measures". The US, Japan and South Korea say they have since defied the ruling and flown military aircraft in the area. The air defence identification zone (ADIZ) covers a vast area of the East China Sea, including a group of islands claimed by Japan, China and Taiwan. South Korea claims a submerged rock, known as Ieodo, also within the zone. The establishment of the ADIZ has caused widespread anger, with the US state department calling it "an attempt to unilaterally change the status quo in the East China Sea" which will "raise regional tensions and increase the risk of miscalculation, confrontation and accidents". 'Firm but calm' On Thursday, China had announced it was deploying warplanes in the area for surveillance and defence. Then on Friday, Air Force spokesman Col Shen Jinke said warplanes had been scrambled that morning to monitor two US surveillance aircraft and 10 Japanese planes - including early warning aircraft, surveillance aircraft and fighter jets - crossing through the ADIZ. Col Shen said the jets had tracked the flights and identified the planes, state media reports. Japanese officials gave no details of the flights, but said they were continuing to conduct routine operations in the region and had encountered no "abnormal instances so far". China, Japan and Taiwan all claim islands lying within the air defence zone Earlier, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said China had a right to patrol the region and that the ADIZ was not aimed at any specific country. "If some worry has emerged about the situation, it's agitated by some individual countries," he told a regular briefing. If disputes existed, China wanted to solve them through "peaceful means via friendly negotiation," he said. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Friday that Japan would respond "firmly but in a calm manner" to China's move, the Kyodo news agency reports. Foreign Minister Fumio Kushida said the issue would be discussed with US Vice-President Joe Biden, who is due to begin a three-day visit to Japan on Monday. The disputed group of uninhabited islands in the zone are known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in Chinese. They are controlled by Japan, but have been the subject of rising tensions in recent years because of their proximity to important shipping lanes, fishing grounds and potential fossil fuel reserves. South Korea has complained to China that the ADIZ also overlaps its own similar defence zone, and encompasses the Ieodo rock. A number of regional commercial airlines - including Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Korean Air - have said they will comply with China's new requirements. Japan Listeni/dʒəˈpæn/ (Japanese: 日本 Nippon or Nihon; formally 日本国 About this sound Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, literally "[the] State of Japan") is an island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The characters that make up Japan's name mean "sun-origin", which is why Japan is sometimes referred to as the "Land of the Rising Sun". Japan is an archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest islands are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Together, these four islands hold about 97 percent of Japan's land area. Japan has the world's tenth-largest population, with more than 126 million people. Honshū's Greater Tokyo Area, includes the de facto capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures. It is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with more than 30 million residents. China (Listeni/ˈtʃaɪnə/; Chinese: 中国; pinyin: Zhōngguó), officially the People's Republic of China, is a sovereign state located in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing.[13] It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). The PRC also claims Taiwan -- which is controlled by the Republic of China (ROC), a separate political entity --

F-35 전투기 연내 배치...무기 도입 '속도전' Japan is expected to deploy its first batch of F-35 stealth fighters by the end of this year,... jets which are being assembled in Japan. They're part of an upgrade to Tokyo's already formidable air force... and could set some nerves on edge in the region. Yu Joonhee reports. At a ceremony held on Monday at Toyoyama in Aichi Prefecture, Japan publically unveiled its first domestically-assembled F-35A stealth fighter jet. The aircraft is the first of thirty-eight which will be license-produced in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, in addition to the four that have already been assembled and delivered from the U.S. Japan's defense minister Inada Tomomi said the acquisition of these sophisticated warplanes will strengthen Japan's defense capabilities amid the increasingly difficult security climate it is facing. With their cutting-edge stealth technology and advanced situational awareness, the Japanese F-35s are expected to be deployed in a wide range of missions in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force. The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force is slated to deploy its first license-built F-35 at Misawa Air Base at the Northern tip of the island of Honshu, later this year. The new jets are a part of Tokyo's ambitious rearmament plan, which is also procuring other types of advanced U.S.-made aircraft such as the MV-22 tilt-rotor transport aircraft, Global Hawk surveillance drones, and E-2D Hawkeye early warning aircraft. Japan's record defense spending is reflective of its growing wariness of North Korea, with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe describing Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile threats as a "plague" that could spread and destabilize the wider region if left unchecked. Although Article 9 of Japan's pacifist constitution forbids the country from engaging in war, its neighbors remain on guard over Abe's recent efforts to expand the role of Japan's military.
